remembering Venice

Back to our vacation:
Wednesday morning we took a high speed train from Rome to Venice. I believe it was this train that was quite stressful in trying to find room for out luggage. But we made it to Venice in a couple hours.
so happy to have another picture taken

Pat and I had been here before, so it was mostly time to show the kids. We got our vaporetto pass and headed to our hotel. A vaporetto is a water bus. We checked into the annex of the Hotel Bernardi, and a cold bottle of prosecco welcomed us!

The room was nice (and cozy).

Off we went to tour the city. The downside with Venice is the crowds. It is a popular cruise destination and hub. Yes, we were those cruisers a couple years ago. But Venice is such a unique place with all the waterways and cool architecture. We did not do any tours, we just wandered.

Did the obligatory pictures on the Rialto Bridge.

And found an amazing pizza place. Later, we had a nice dinner alongside a waterway, with gondolas going by. However, it was obvious that the locals were served quicker.
The next morning we found a local grocery store and bought breakfast.

Then we just hopped on a vaporetto and rode it to the end, it took us around the back of the city, where I saw the local hospital and it's boat ambulances.

And we wandered some more. That evening, our last in Italy, we actually had Chinese food. It was amazing!!
Pat and I got up early to see the local fish market the we had missed on our last trip. And, we stopped at a local coffee shop. Yum....we brought some pastries back for the sleeping kids.

It was time to get ready to leave Italy. As we were packing we heard some jets flying overhead. It was the local flying team-the frecce tricolori-doing a flyover Venice. Very cool.
the colored smoke left from the planes

At the train station we had our good-bye Italy gelato.

bye bye Venice!
